Downtown Victoria and its harbour provide an outdoor classroom, ideal for classes studying diverse aspects of British Columbian and Canadian history. Chinatown Walks |
|
| |
Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada and is a favourite place for schools to visit at any time of the year, but especially during the celebration of Chinese New Year (January 26 to February 9, 2009). Choose the themes you want to emphasize: immigration, family life, social customs, symbolism, religion, architecture and political issues. Or take a general tour that includes them all. Grade-specific hands-on activities can be included.

White Jade Tiger |
|
| |
Julie Lawson’s novel, White Jade Tiger, takes place in Victoria’s Chinatown. Walk the alleys and streets where Jasmine and Keung met. See where Dragon Maker worked and where Blue Scar Wong’s gambling den was located. General Chinatown background is included, so even for students who have not completed reading the book, the tour provides an excellent overview of Chinatown life.

Ghostly Walks |
|
| |
Ghost stories are a great way to interest students in Victoria’s history. They can illustrate the city’s First Nations origins, the days of Fort Victoria, gold rushes and civic life in general. Stories are geared to the ages of the students and purpose of the tour. Ghostly Walks are appropriate at any time of the year, but particularly in October. This tour is very popular with out-of-town schools which are staying overnight in Victoria, but it also works very well during the daytime.
